After that unseasonably warm summer and introduction to fall (sorry for reminding you that we were only a few degrees shy of 100 in the middle of September), many Fort Collins residents are beyond ready for some cold weather. Before we know it, we’ll be back to the good ol’ Colorado we know so well, with plenty cold weather and snow to boot.

Even though Coloradans typically act the same way during a blizzard as they do on a temperate summer’s day, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared for the worst. Fort Collins rarely shuts down due to weather, but just in case it does, it is a good idea to keep a stash of emergency goods on hand if you ever find yourself unable or unwilling to leave your apartment to venture out into the winter wonderland.

Below, we’ve listed a few things you might want to keep at the ready this winter in your Fort Collins apartment.

Stock Your Fort Collins Apartment With…

Non-Perishable/No-Cook Food And A Water Supply: Sometimes it’s so snowy outside that the last thing you want to do is leave your apartment. While you could just order some food, there comes a point where even pizzerias close their doors and send their delivery drivers home, leaving you out of luck. Keep a stash of non-perishable food on hand and some water jugs just in case the town shuts down and you can’t go grab a bite to eat.

Flashlights: Just like a home, apartment complexes can sometimes experience power outages. It is always a good idea to keep a stash of flashlights and batteries in an easily accessible place just in case you need to break them out.

Extra Blankets And A Space Heater: Our maintenance staff takes your comfort very seriously, and being without heat on a cold winter night is certainly constitutes an emergency maintenance call. While you wait for after hours emergency maintenance, you’ll be thankful for having a few extra blankets to keep you warm just in case we can’t solve the problem right away. If the power is working, you can also plug in a space heater — just be sure it has an automatic timer and that you are using it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Firewood And Matches: Okay, we get that it’s 2018 and you’re probably not going to have to rely on fire to keep your Fort Collins apartment warm — but that doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of a snow day with a cozy fire in your wood-burning fireplace!

Specialty Foods: We’re not talking about ensuring you have your favorite snack on hand (though, that’s not a bad idea). By specialty foods, we are talking about ensuring you have a stash of baby food and formula if you have an infant, as well as plenty of food for your pets should you find yourself unable to get to the store during a blizzard.
