As we approach the end of 2018, you are likely starting to think about how to decorate your apartment for the upcoming holiday season. During summer, we spend a lot of our time outdoors, so it doesn’t occur to most people living in our Fort Collins apartments to put up any summertime decorations. However, as the weather cools down and Stone Creek residents begin spending more time in their apartment homes, you will notice plenty of holiday decor around the complex.

Holiday Decor Safety

We will start with the most important reminder about holiday decorations: safety. Many holiday decorations, from holiday lights to pumpkin-scented candles, can pose a fire threat if not used correctly. If you are stringing up lights or wrapping them around a Christmas tree, make sure to turn them off when you leave the apartment or go to sleep. If you are forgetful, use lights that you can put on a timer. If you will be putting strings of lights on your balcony or another outside area, double check that your lights are designed to be outside in the elements, as well as ensuring any extension cords you use are also designed for outside use.

Speaking of cords, be sure to not overload your outlets. If you plug your Christmas lights, your space heater, your TV, your laptop, your floor lamp, your vacuum, and your video game console into one power strip, things might get a little risky. Make sure to evenly distribute these items among the power outlets in your apartment.

Speaking of fire hazards, if you are in one of our apartments with a wood burning fireplace, make sure to use your fireplace safely. First, always make sure the flue is open before lighting a fire in your fireplace. Never use lighter fluid or other flammable liquids to start your fire. Instead, light some crumpled newspaper below your firewood or use a similar kindling to get your fire started. If you are using a firelog such as Duraflame, do not use any other wood logs in the fireplace, as this can cause a major flare-up that is too large for your fireplace. Never leave the house or go to bed before the fire in your fireplace is safely out, and along those same lines, be very cautious when using candles around your apartment and remember to blow them out before you leave the room. Be sure to keep all decorations a safe distance away from your fireplace or any open flames, and as a precaution, we recommend keeping a fire extinguisher in your apartment unit.

Apartment-Friendly Holiday Decorations

Now for the fun stuff! Holiday wreaths and stockings hung by the chimney with care are all great — just make sure to protect your walls in the process. Over the door hangers are a great way to put a big wreath on your front door without using nails, and Command™ Hooks work wonders for stringing lights or garland up on your wall and hanging up stockings.

Even though the snow will be falling here shortly, you can always make your apartment a little more wintery by spending the day with your roommate or kids cutting out paper snowflakes. You can easily string these up using dental floss and Scotch tape without worrying about damaging the paint. Taping paper snowflakes onto your windows also helps your apartment to look decorated from the outside, getting passersby into the holiday spirit as well!
