Happy Halloween, Stone Creek Residents!

For many of our residents, Halloween is a holiday to indulge in your favorite sweets and have a fun time with friends. Because Halloween falls on a Wednesday this year, any Halloween parties and festivities were likely held over the weekend. But that doesn’t mean Halloween is over just yet!

To help make the most of your mid-week Halloween this year, we’re offering up six suggestions for movies to watch in your Fort Collins apartment. We’ve separated these films into two categories for those who really like to be scared and for those who just want to be able to sleep tonight. So grab some snacks, invite a few friends over, and check out these spooky and scary movies below:

Truly Frightening Movies To Watch In Your Apartment

A Quiet Place

This newer horror flick (that will surely earn a spot among the classics) follows a family in a post-apocalyptic world full of bloodthirsty monsters that hunt based on a sense of sound. Because of this monster, the film itself features very little dialogue and sound, making it perfect for turning off the lights, settling in on the couch, and creating an equally quiet atmosphere.

The Exorcist

New movies rely on CGI and modern cinematic techniques to create horrifying monsters. The Exorcist relies on pure spook-factor to put the heebie-jeebies in you. This 1973 classic is about a 12-year-old girl who is possessed by a demon and begins levitating, speaking in tongues, and displaying other odd behavior. The scariest part? The Exorcist is loosely based on a true story!

The Shining

This iconic movie features perhaps the most famous two words ever uttered in a horror film: Here’s Johnny! This film follows Jack, a writer turned caretaker of a hotel right here in Colorado. When his son, Danny, begins to have disturbing psychic premonitions, Jack’s sanity begins to leave him, turning him into a psychopathic killer. Might we suggest following up this movie with a weekend trip to Estes Park, where you can stay at the historic Stanley Hotel, which might seem a little too familiar after watching The Shining.

Fun Halloween Movies

If you have to get up early for class on November 1 — and considering that you’re living in apartments near CSU, you might have to — it might not be the best idea to watch a truly frightening movie on Halloween night! Instead, try any of these three Halloween movies below that aren’t actually very scary.

Hocus Pocus

A remake of this cult favorite is allegedly in the works, so there is no time like the present to watch (or rewatch) this iconic movie. This 1993 classic follows the Sanderson sisters, three witches who are resurrected by a teenager living in Salem, Massachusetts. It includes all of the Halloween staples including trick-or-treating, black cats, zombies, and a fantastic musical number.

It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Because a lot of young college students live in our apartments near CSU, it is not unlikely that you watched this movie as a kid growing up and that your parents also enjoyed this movie when they were children. This movie, though over 50 years old, is the perfect feel-good movie for anyone who wants to get into the spirit of Halloween without having to watch a spooky film.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

This Tim Burton classic follows the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, Jack Skellington, as he gets bored with the same old Halloween festivities every year. But when he discovers the nearby Christmas Town with its bright colors and joyful citizens, he decides his town should celebrate Christmas. This leads to a memorable mashup of dark Halloween imagery with festive Christmas themes. It’s the perfect movie for anyone who is eager for Halloween to pass and Christmas to arrive.
